Good idea but the timers should be smart and carefully adjusted. Today's SFOS behavior of connman (Sailfish network manager) tends to get carrier to offline mode when switching from 4G to 2G or vice...

Is there any study that shows this to produce relevant savings? I'm on a 3G only network with the phones locked to 3G only and I don't really see much difference in battery time. One of the SIMs I have...

For N900 there was this great app called autodisconnect. It made the device switch if there wasn't enough data send.

In my experience the common situation around the world is that the 2g network is everywhere, the 3g not. In case you are so lucky to live in a place where there are a good and perfect 3g/4g coverage...

@deedend Here is one example why 2g isn't always the best option to save power: http://www.theseus.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/59757/Oksanen_Janne.pdf Also switching between 2g / 3g ( and 4g ) eats battery.

@deedend I understood your idea well but I wanted to give an example that if you have good coverage in 3g it might eat less battery than 2g. Your idea to lock to 2g (in idle) is good when user knows...

@aegis I wish Finland was 3G only already :D Coalesced updates would be nice, so phone would only open data connection every 30 or 60 minutes for example. That would be enough for me. Obviously...

With modern chipsets things have changed for sure. Consider that the Nokia E71 (2008) promised 10.5 hours talk time for 2G but only 4.5 hours for 3G. Jolla promises 9 hours for 2G and 10 hours for 3G!

N900 used to have application that enabled fast change between 2G and 3G. I would rather have it manual so that I can choose when to apply. This of course assumes that there are reasonable powersavings...

My experiences confirm this, although I switched to 2G-only mode when roaming. It definitely helped my N9 to run longer.

Interesting... in that situation (only 3g or 4g network) the system should remain on that network... It must be a "preferred 2g switch" not only 2g in idle. so if there will be 2g the system chose it,...

Good idea, but it should have an optional setting, if the system should try to switch to 2g-only at all. Unfortunately I don't know much about mobile networks but I was at places in Budapest, Hungary,...

@Razor maybe I haven't explained enough my idea (I'm not a native english, I'm a poor italian)... the target is exactly to avoid the continuous switch between 2g/3g/4g so maybe there could be an option...

yes, this mode must be activable only on demand, it could be useful in certain situation but not in all cases

I had around two days uptime with my jolla usage in prefer 3g mode. Then I started to switch to 2g every time I shut down mobile network connections, and get 3 days of uptime with full batter. That's a...
View Articlesuggestion - 2g in idle for saving battery time
I have an idea to increase, in some situations, the battery time; to receive notifications (for example email or whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, etc...) is enough even a slow connection like the 2g one,...
